Important Announcement

I’m sad to say that issue 10 was the last issue of Style Sample magazine.

This was a really difficult decision to make. I still love the concept–there’s so much talent in the fashion blogging community and I do feel there’s a need for a showcase of sorts. Unfortunately, as a freelancer, it’s no longer viable for me to spend so much time and energy on an unpaid project without steady income to back it up.

To be honest, the last two issues almost didn’t happen. Putting together a magazine is a LOT of work! We went from 16 pages in the first issue to 62 in the last, without adding any additional editorial/design staff. When I say “We,” I mean it in the sense of the royal plural. It really just means “me.”

I could not have completed even one issue without the wonderfully talented writers, artists, photographers, designers, and bloggers who contributed to the magazine. I started SSM as a platform for fashion bloggers, who continue to impress and inspire the world with their creativity, ambition, and style every day. I know this community will continue to thrive.

Previous issues will still be available online and in print, though I’m not yet sure what will happen with this site. I think (hope!) there’s some good info here, so I’ll do my best to make sure it’s available on the internets for as long as possible.

Thank you so much to everyone who read, linked to, tweeted, skimmed, purchased, or supported this little project. You’ve helped make this girl’s dreams a reality.

Gift guide: Fashion bloggers

Gift guide: Fashion bloggers

Fashion bloggers are a special breed: stylish, of course, but also tech-savvy by definition, and definitely not afraid to take on a do-it-yourself project. We need the right look and the right equipment to document and blog it–with a little inspiration thrown in for good measure.

Here are some gift ideas for the style blogger in your life:

1. Nikon D3100, $649. A good, entry-level digital SLR camera that makes it easy to take good pictures and shoot video.

2. Topshop crop back blazer, approx. $93. Your basic wear-it-with-anything-and-it-looks-good staple.

3. The September Issue, $14.99. No matter how you feel about the magazine, Ms. Wintour’s power is undeniable and sort of inspiring, in a “let’s be bitches together” kind of way.

4. Jeffrey Campbell Foxy Wood, $119.95. The requisite fashion blogger shoe from the masters of the platform.

5. Macbook Air, $999. Light enough to take everywhere for blogging on the go.

6. Rent the Runway gift card, any amount. When you like fashion, it’s easy to get bored with what’s in your closet. Renting designer clothes=problem solved!

7. Photoshop CS5, $699. Ugh! Those bags under your eyes from last night’s party don’t look so good in pictures–and they don’t erase themselves. Photoshop to the rescue!

8. Magazine subscriptions, $60-$150. Those foreign fashion mags are killer inspiration, but the subscriptions can be expensive. Help a blogger out with the gift that keeps on giving.

9. House of Harlow 1960 Stacked Jagged rings, approx. $149. A wear-everyday stack of go-with-everything rings.

Hip Halloween

Hip Halloween

If you pay attention to the online fashion world, you start to notice that certain names and faces pop up regularly. Instead of playing the sexy nurse/devil/cost accountant card this Halloween, why not take a different route and dress up as one of these oft-mentioned style gossip stars?

Taylor Momsen

It shouldn’t be difficult to put together a cheap black lace and leather concoction from your neighborhood Hustler store. Add a stringy blonde wig, overdone eyeliner, dark lips, and you’re ready to be as angst-y as the formerly adorable Little J.

Image, Zimbio

Kanye at the 2010 VMAs

Besides being significant as the time ‘Ye didn’t embarrass himself at the VMAs, this year’s performance featured Kanye in a bright red look that’s fairly simple to mimic. Hunt down a red pantsuit at Goodwill, spray paint an old pair of high tops, add some cheap gold chains and a black tee, and scribble on a goatee with an eyeliner pencil. Now get ready to spin!

Anna Dello Russo

While you probably won’t be able to exactly replicate the pure dopeness of the feathered headpiece, you can approximate the look by gluing bands of tall feathers to an old hat and making an eye mask out of your grandma’s old doily.

Chop up a thrifted wedding dress, pin in some long white extensions, and wait to haughtily correct people who call you Lady Gaga.

Image, JAK & JIL

Willow Smith

So, fine, you’re probably not 4’8″ tall, but you can play it off! Throw on a bunch of mis-matched prints, braid (or shave, if you’re that committed) one side of your head, and don’t forget to whip yo’ hair!

Now Lovin’ 9.30.10

Now Lovin’ 9.30.10

What we’re loving right now:

Sketch it out

If you’ve ever fancied yourself an artist (or a wannabe artist–ahem), check out Odosketch, a Flash drawing application that allows you to create “drawings” that look like they were done in an actual sketchbook.

Fall-ready

Fall is here! We love the idea of using accessories to add a pop of autumn color to your neutrals like IN3GUE.

The fashion font

Have you ever wondered what the alphabet would look like as a fashion show? No? Us either, but artist Yvette Yunjung creates interesting–and slightly disturbing–lettering from each season’s runway collections.

How do you respond to PR pitches?

How do you respond to PR pitches?

We’ve talked a bit about this before (both in issue #6 of Style Sample magazine and in a follow-up post here), but we’ve always wondered:

How are fellow fashion bloggers responding to PR pitches?

If you’ve been blogging long enough, you’ve likely received a few eager emails from PR agencies or press reps asking you to cover a new line or informing you about a new online boutique. Some pitches are more professional than others, but the idea is the same: they want you to tell your readers about their stuff.

The Rules (sort of)

While there are no hard and fast rules about responding to PR pitches (relevant or not), basic manners apply.  Here are seven guidelines that you should follow as a blogger when dealing with public relations pros (taken from a fantastic article called Blogging etiquette in the face of a PR pitch):

Rule #1: Act professionally.

Remember that professionalism is everything. This relates to courteousness too. Keep your tone polite.

Rule #2: Be humble.

By blogging, you’ll reap some nice rewards (and awards). Don’t let that fame get to your head. You might be great and receive a lot of accolades, but it doesn’t make you any better than the people you deal with. In most cases, you’re not as important as you think you are.

Rule #3: Remember who you are dealing with.

PR people aren’t in the ad sales industry. Their goal is to send press pitches, not to buy ads on your site. If a blogger outreach consultant or social media agency emails you a story pitch, read their signature. If it doesn’t say “media buyer” or if they haven’t explicitly asked for your media kit, chances are they can’t follow through with an ad buy.

Rule #4: This could be the start of something big.

The right PR person is just as connected with the rest of the world as they are with bloggers themselves. In fact, a relationship that starts on the right foot might actually translate to better things down the road, including special event invites and freebies that might as well be equivalent to a really good ad deal. Perhaps, real ad sales will follow. A bad first impression will never get you to that point. A great first impression can be very rewarding.

Rule #5: It’s a relationship, stupid!

Did I mention at all in this article that these are still interpersonal relationships? To quote The Happiness Project author Gretchen Rubin, act the way you want to feel.

Rule #6: Remember where you were when you started.

There’s more to blogging than just dollar signs. There’s relationship building (see rule #6), influence, branding, and more. Don’t have a narrow focus because the grass seems greener when the riches are easily attainable.

At the end of the day, blogs are a relationship-building tool. That’s probably how you got to where you are now, by sharing your voice and providing insights that helped build those relationships, like having your readers trust you. Think about what you did before to get you where you are today. Never stop doing that either. The options might be more plentiful nowadays but you should stay true to why you started blogging to begin with.

Rule #7: You need PR people as much as they need you.

Maybe not now, but your future could depend on them.

It’s a reciprocal relationship, for sure. Bloggers need content. Brands need coverage. So, if the product or service being pitched is a good fit for your blog, do you tell your readers about it? If you think the stuff they’re pitching is godawful, do you respond? If/when you do respond, what do you say?

Poll: Are you a shopping machine?

Poll: Are you a shopping machine?

A few weeks ago, Ashe Mischief wrote a thought-provoking post called Finance and the Fashion Blogger, and many of us expressed our opinions on the issue.

As many people try to cut back on habits of conspicuous consumption, it can be especially daunting for fashion and style bloggers, who often use new purchases as fodder for posts. In addition,–and we’re just keepin’ it real here– shopping is fun, and as bloggers, we know where to find the good stuff. It’s a hard habit to break.

So, having said all that, we’re curious: Are you shopping more or less? And how often do you actually buy stuff?

Style Sample #7: in print

Last weekend, I finally had a chance to really take time and flip through the print edition of the newest issue of Style Sample magazine–and I have to say, it looks great!

Individual issues are mailed in a sealed poly bag for protection–no scratches or tears here!

Images are clear and bright:

Text is crisp and legible:

As a lifelong magazine fiend, I love coming home to find a pristine new magazine in my mailbox (even though I already know each issue practically by heart!) and it’s just nice to feel the weight of the paper and leisurely flip through each page.

You can order print issues for about $8 here. Enjoy!

Inspiration: Independent fashion entrepreneurs

Inspiration: Independent fashion entrepreneurs

We’ve really been feeling the entrepreneurial spirit at Style Sample lately. Maybe it’s the spring weather and the promise of a new start, or maybe we’re ready to change direction, but we’re looking to past and current Blogging + Business features (and obsessively watching clips of “Kell on Earth”) for inspiration:

“The best part is being able to create this business from the ground up on my own. The worst part is being able to create this business from the ground up on my own… it’s hard work but also extremely rewarding.”
~Rodellee of Adore Vintage, Issue #1

“Engage in Twitter, write a blog, do free PR for your friend with the cute handbag line. If the opportunities aren’t there, look for ways to create them on your own terms.”
Crosby of PR Couture, Issue #2

“I’m in love with storytelling, which makes the pieces intimate and meaningful to the owner. The personal touch is best.”
~Wendy of Wendy Brandes Jewelry, Issue #3

“Whatever I put into it is what I get out… so at the end of the day, there is nothing as rewarding as this.”
~Mimi of Brook&Lyn, Issue #4

“Just write about something that you are passionate about and it will come easy. If you really love what you do and work hard at it, then you will be successful.”
~Krista of MyLookbook, Issue #5

“I guess the most crazy part of it is how quickly it’s grown from a small online store to a business which has over 100 stockists.  Rach and I literally squeal when we see girls on the street wearing Stylestalker.”
~Sue-Ann and Rachel of Stylestalker, Issue #6

Are you interested in building your own fashion-based business? How do you get inspired?

A little encouragement

I’ve been alternating between feverishly scribbling ideas for the magazine and wondering how/if the next issue will come to be. I’d just received some disappointing news about a workspace I was hoping to rent and was feeling kind of discouraged, when I checked my inbox and saw the following message:

Hi Tamia,

The MagCloud team wanted to congratulate you on very impressive monthly sales of Style Sample Magazine. Your past month magazine issue sales were so impressive it earned you a spot in the Top 10 Publishers of the Month.

To celebrate your success we would like to offer you and your readers 25% off the current issue of your magazine through 4/30/2010.

If you would like to offer it to your friends, family and reader base simply give them the coupon code: STYLE SAMPLE410 for them to enter when they order your magazine on magcloud.com and the discount will be automatically applied when they check out.

The coupon is good through 4/30/2010.

The universe works in strange and wonderful ways.

I completely understand how it feels to be discouraged/burnt-out/overwhelmed/underwhelmed/unsure, so I’m passing the encouragement I just received along to you:

You can do it. I believe in you, even when you don’t.

Now, take advantage of that discount!
