If you sell handmade items, art, or vintage clothing and accessories, fairs and markets are a great way to promote your business and make a little extra cash for the holidays!

This time of year, most communities are fraught with holiday craft markets and pop-up shops specifically designed for small vendors and crafters to sell their unique goods. If you sell handmade items, art, or vintage clothing and accessories, fairs and markets are a great way to promote your business and make a little extra cash for the holidays.

Finding markets

Search the ever-helpful internets for “(your city) holiday market”, check with your local etsy street team, Yelp, and Craigslist, event listing sites like Festival Network Online and FairsandFestivals.net, or even your local Chamber of Commerce.

Fees and traffic

Most markets charge a fee to participate, usually anywhere between $15-$700. Smaller markets will charge a lower “booth fee,” while larger, more established events–which usually draw more traffic–charge more. If costs are high, see if the event will permit you to share a booth and split the rental fee. Ask the market organizers to provide statistics about past and projected attendance and average vendor sales if available.

If you’re in the US, you may also need a license or permit to sell–check with the local government to determine the requirements.

What to bring

Besides merchandise to sell, there are other things you’ll need to bring to set up your area.

Set-up

Most markets that take place this time of year don’t require a tent, but a table and chairs, rolling racks, and collapsible shelves are inexpensive basics for setting up. Make sure to bring bags for customers to carry your products home in!

Administrative

Since this is a sales venture, you should bring plenty of business cards, a calculator, pen and pad, a cash box and cash (for change). Each individual piece of merchandise should be clearly priced, and it’s a good idea to bring a mailing list sign-up so you can keep in contact with people interested in your stuff.

Help

You’ll need at least one other person to help take care of customers and watch the booth when you need a break. Portable snacks and a water bottle always come in handy, too.

Make it look good

This is the fun part! The type of merchandising permitted may change depending on the market’s rules and the amount of space available, but remember to stay true to your branding–use your logo and the colors on your site in your decor.

Signage

Make sure your business’ name is clear and legible from a distance. Try to hang the sign with your business name and URL above your table or booth so it’s visible regardless of the crowd.

Displays

If you sell clothing and accessories, display pieces on a dress form or mannequin, or prettify your set-up with colorful table cloths, baskets, boxes, or a backdrop. The more it looks and feels like an inviting boutique, the more people your booth will attract.

Stand out!

Nancy of brick-and-mortar shop Talk of the Town Vintage started out by attending markets and fairs, and often received attention for the hats she’d wear. People would stop by her booth just to see “the Hat Lady.” You don’t have to have a gimmick, but a unique feature that draws attention never hurts!

Follow up

You’ll make contacts with customers and potential customers, in addition to connecting with other vendors–who can keep you in the loop about future opportunities. Keep in touch with your fellow vendors! Send a follow-up email, comment on their blog, friend them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, or arrange to chat over coffee. Networking contacts are invaluable.

Mailing list

If you collect emails, add them to your mailing list and send a message welcoming new subscribers and asking them to join you on social networking sites. It also helps to remind new subscribers that they’re on your mailing list because they signed up at XYZ market.

Special projects

If people ask you about custom orders or special projects, make sure follow up with an email or phone call. They could turn out to be your best clients!

Gift ideas for the style blogger in your life!

Fashion bloggers are a special breed: stylish, of course, but also tech-savvy by definition, and definitely not afraid to take on a do-it-yourself project. We need the right look and the right equipment to document and blog it–with a little inspiration thrown in for good measure.

Here are some gift ideas for the style blogger in your life:

1. Nikon D3100, $649. A good, entry-level digital SLR camera that makes it easy to take good pictures and shoot video.

2. Topshop crop back blazer, approx. $93. Your basic wear-it-with-anything-and-it-looks-good staple.

3. The September Issue, $14.99. No matter how you feel about the magazine, Ms. Wintour’s power is undeniable and sort of inspiring, in a “let’s be bitches together” kind of way.

4. Jeffrey Campbell Foxy Wood, $119.95. The requisite fashion blogger shoe from the masters of the platform.

5. Macbook Air, $999. Light enough to take everywhere for blogging on the go.

6. Rent the Runway gift card, any amount. When you like fashion, it’s easy to get bored with what’s in your closet. Renting designer clothes=problem solved!

7. Photoshop CS5, $699. Ugh! Those bags under your eyes from last night’s party don’t look so good in pictures–and they don’t erase themselves. Photoshop to the rescue!

8. Magazine subscriptions, $60-$150. Those foreign fashion mags are killer inspiration, but the subscriptions can be expensive. Help a blogger out with the gift that keeps on giving.

It shouldn’t be difficult to put together a cheap black lace and leather concoction from your neighborhood Hustler store. Add a stringy blonde wig, overdone eyeliner, dark lips, and you’re ready to be as angst-y as the formerly adorable Little J.

Image, Zimbio

Kanye at the 2010 VMAs

Besides being significant as the time ‘Ye didn’t embarrass himself at the VMAs, this year’s performance featured Kanye in a bright red look that’s fairly simple to mimic. Hunt down a red pantsuit at Goodwill, spray paint an old pair of high tops, add some cheap gold chains and a black tee, and scribble on a goatee with an eyeliner pencil. Now get ready to spin!

Image, kanyewest.us

Anna Dello Russo

While you probably won’t be able to exactly replicate the pure dopeness of the feathered headpiece, you can approximate the look by gluing bands of tall feathers to an old hat and making an eye mask out of your grandma’s old doily.

Chop up a thrifted wedding dress, pin in some long white extensions, and wait to haughtily correct people who call you Lady Gaga.

Image, JAK & JIL

Willow Smith

So, fine, you’re probably not 4’8″ tall, but you can play it off! Throw on a bunch of mis-matched prints, braid (or shave, if you’re that committed) one side of your head, and don’t forget to whip yo’ hair!

Blogger and online boutique owner Rodellee of Adore Vintage picks some of the most coveted items from her shop

Blogger and online boutique owner Rodellee of Adore Vintage picks some of the most coveted items from her shop:

1.Dash of Nutmeg Dress
Why I adore it: I love this with a pair of black opaque tights and little heels or booties. I love mini dresses with bows and this vintage 1960s dress is just so darling!

2. Aphrodite Necklace
Why I adore it: I LOVE the cameo detail on the pendant, it’s cupid! This vintage necklace looks like a mini piece of art with lavender gemstones and the triple strand gold chain.

3. Licorice Stripe Dress
Why I adore it: I love this because it can easily go from “Farmer’s Market” to “First Date” with a change of shoes, handbag, and jewelry. It’s a lightweight vintage 1970s cotton sundress.

4. Fall of Cleo Cuff
Why I adore it: Very reminscent of something Rachel Zoe would wear and I adore her glamorous 1970s vintage-inspired style.

5. Manolo Blahnik Heels
Why I adore it: An instant classic, an essential to any girl’s wardrobe! A black pair of pumps, and what better than vintage Manolos? I love these because they’re not too overly trendy looking, and instead look stylish and classic so they can be worn season to season.

6. The Secret Garden Dress
Why I adore it: I love feminine and flowy vintage dresses and this 1970s gown is just so very pretty, I especially love the hidden details like the ruching on the shoulders and tiny flower buttons on the sleeves.

7. A Bouquet for Cie
Why I adore it: I love whimsical vintage handbags, especially if they feature floral print. There is just something so dandy and old school about them, a little Granny I suppose, but I really love how sweet this vintage 1940s frame purse is.
